Choosing a guitar is a very personal thing.  It is based on a lot of factors.  Tone and feel are two  important elements to consider when choosing an acoustic guitar, while action and pick-ups rule when selecting an electric guitar or bass.

On a second level wood type and color/finish is always a factor.  But why stop there.  The number of frets should be considered, as it  determines if higher notes can be played,  and the body type (hollow vs. solid body) come into play when considering what types of effects or amplification will be needed.  Finally, you should look at each part of the guitar (head, neck, frets, body and bridge) at an individual level and note the change of sound as you move from one type of wood to the next, or as you experiment with higher or lower action in both sound and feel.

In the end, if it sounds good and feels good in your hands, and comes through in the mix for the style of music you like to play, well then you've got what you need.
