Squiers are good entry level guitars. As far as getting a new guitar, you should go and play ones that you are thinking of buying. All guitars are different, and people usually buy in my experience based on three things: sound, feel, looks. For me, I like Fender Stratocasters. The Les Paul is a great guitar, but for me the neck is a little too thick, but you may like it. BC Rich makes great guitars, but most are a little too flashy for me.

I personally didn't like it at all when I had it. It was very cheap, yes. But I couldn't get a decent metal sound out of it. The pick-ups seemed pretty bad and the action was very high. I have an Epiphone Les Paul Special 2 with DiMarzio Tone Zone / X2N pick-ups and it is worlds better. Now I'm getting a Schecter Research Damien Elite. Good luck with guitar! If you want another pretty cheap guitar that's better I would recommend an Epiphone Les Paul.

Strats are amazing!

Many guitarists have truly shaped music with Fenders, John Frusciante, Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix.
The tone is great and the pickups are SWEEEET!!!

Great price, great feel.

The perfect guitar for ANY genre.

I think it's under rated. It's a really good guitar to use. A great started, actually more than great.

And i'd suggesta Les Paul if you got the money

I have a squire strat, and it's not bad. However, it's not top-of-the-line by any means. If I were you, I'd definitely go with the Les Paul, or a Fender Strat (non-squier, lol). Go with whatever feels right on your fingers, though.

A squire is a great guitar to learn on. One of the best entry-level instruments. You should upgrade when the limitations of the Squire get in the way of your playing. Basically when you know the difference without having to ask, the go get yourself a new guitar. Spend a lot of time trying out different ones at music stores until you find the one that is right for you and your style of playing.

American Stratocasters are similar to Mexican ones mostly in style and body. Outside of that they can be very different. Headstock, bridge, tremelo, pick ups and tuners are going to be upgraded in the American version. If you are really into this and going to be for some time, get an American Strat. If you are just playing around, not as serious, spend less.
