Fender Telecaster

The Fender Telecaster revolutionized the electric guitar. It became the standard by which all solid body guitars would be measured. Developed in 1949 and produced as early as 1950 the Telecaster is both simple in design and set up. The telecaster featured two pick-ups and a bolt on maple neck. Rather than gluing a fret board to the Telecaster, Fender used the maple neck as the fretboard, pressing the frets directly on the maple.

The 1952 Telecaster is by far one of the most played solid body guitars of all time. Some changes have been made since the earliest models were produced; primarily the wiring for the toggle switch from two positions to three. The location of the truss rod adjustment from end to headstock, and the addition of another fret, giving the Telecaster 22. However the look of the Tele has changed very little.
The addition of a third position for the toggle switch that controlled the pick-ups gave guitarist more control over their sound. In the first position the neck pick-up is selected. In the second position the neck and bridge pick-ups are selected, and in the third position the bridge pick-up alone. Controlling both of these pick-ups are two knobs for adjusting the master volume and tone. This creates alot of options, starting with very bright clean tones with the neck pick-up, ranging to warmer sounds with the bridge pick-up and tone controls.
A great all purpose guitar for both rock, country jazz and blues the Tele has survived a long time looking about the same as it did when it was first released. Some alternative Telecaster's have become popular, like the Deluxe, Plus or Custom models that feature either slight body changes, or different pick-ups, birdges or tuners. The Telecaster is and always will be a great deal for what you get out of it - a great classic sound; both rich and bright, and a guitar that will last as long as you will keep it.
